The purist palette of includes 43 shades in 14 series. The series are composed of solid colours and masterfully graduated brightening.

The original coding of the Le Corbusier shades constantly starts with "32xxx" - the series are marked by the last three digits. For example, the ultramarine blue nuances carry the final digits " to ".

In order to recognize personal affinities and to select individual preferences, Le Corbusier also created different colour keyboards with moods that reflect specific functions of the colours. Explore individual shades. The second collection from completes the Architectural Polychromy with 20 other colours that are more powerful and dynamic. These shades are labeled "x" - from A to W. Here again, Le Corbusier designed an additional impressive colour keyboard.

The combination of colourful and achromatic hues and different brightness values underlines the extraordinary experiences of Le Corbusier in architecture and as a painter, which form the foundation of the entire Architectural Polychromy. Or better: polychromy, a component of the ground plan and the section itself. Just like Le Corbusier developed the Architectural Polychromy between and for the Swiss company Salubra in form of a wallpaper collection, our certified manufacturers produce high-quality design products based on the original architectural colours.

Le Corbusier. Polychromie architecturale

The book — which was created for Swiss wallpaper manufacturer Salubra — features pop-up and pull-out sections, based on the architect's approach to colour. Auctioned by New York's Swann Auction Galleries, the guide includes pockets with wallpaper samples and 12 pages dedicated to colour scales — complete with a paper slider. Le Corbusier believed that specific shades could affect rooms and their inhabitants, creating a welcoming atmosphere or altering their perception of space. He identified functions that could be applied to different shades — including psychological effects, weight, depth, perception and unity — and then chose groups of colours to attribute to each of these. Paler colours with natural pigments could be used to create warmth and light, while deeper shades could enhance or camouflage elements in a room. He believed synthetic pigments had a more invigorating effect, and would have a dramatic influence on architecture. The first featured plain colours and the second included designs with large geometric shapes that could be hung to create patterns.

I took the time to color-pick the 63 colors in Le Corbusier's color manifesto "Polychromie Architecturale". The reason is, that I suspect they are an excellent resource not only for architecture, but also possibly for web design. I often struggle to find a decent color scheme for websites I make. I love grids because they take the guesswork out of design. And time-tested color schemes are like grids, but for colors. The two collections first 43 colors from , last 20 from , starting with "rouge vermillon 59" are derived from naturally occurring color tones or pigment and are supposed to make harmonic color pairing possible. Any color goes with any!

New workplaces, new food sources, new medicine--even an entirely new economic system. Black paint dried the fastest, and that mattered more than the expressionistic qualities of different colors. Many modern architects shared a similar obsession with the sterile white box and dismiss color as mere ornament. Not Le Corbusier.

Not content with the mere color selection, drawn from his experience as an architect and painter, he also organized the tones on 12 sample cards in such a manner that, by using a slider, three or five colors could be varyingly isolated or combined. Each card contained a different color scheme meant, when applied, to create a particular spatial effect. This would become not only a useful tool but also a kind of testament of the purist color theory, an essential groundwork and a valuable instrument for all those who deal with color in theory or practice. The second volume contains 13 color plates with the 63 colors, printed using the linseed oil method and glued by hand as well as 4 separate sliders in pocket. Volume three consists of 63 full page color sample sheets, also printed using the linseed oil method.
