The original coding of the Le Corbusier shades constantly starts with "32xxx" - the series are marked by the last three digits. For example, the ultramarine blue nuances carry the final digits " to ".
In order to recognize personal affinities and to select individual preferences, Le Corbusier also created different colour keyboards with moods that reflect specific functions of the colours. The combination of colourful and achromatic hues and different brightness values underlines the extraordinary experiences of Le Corbusier in architecture and as a painter, which form the foundation of the entire Architectural Polychromy. The book — which was created for Swiss wallpaper manufacturer Salubra — features pop-up and pull-out sections, based on the architect's approach to colour. Auctioned by New York's Swann Auction Galleries, the guide includes pockets with wallpaper samples and 12 pages dedicated to colour scales — complete with a paper slider. Le Corbusier believed that specific shades could affect rooms and their inhabitants, creating a welcoming atmosphere or altering their perception of space. He identified functions that could be applied to different shades — including psychological effects, weight, depth, perception and unity — and then chose groups of colours to attribute to each of these. Paler colours with natural pigments could be used to create warmth and light, while deeper shades could enhance or camouflage elements in a room. He believed synthetic pigments had a more invigorating effect, and would have a dramatic influence on architecture. The first featured plain colours and the second included designs with large geometric shapes that could be hung to create patterns.
I took the time to color-pick the 63 colors in Le Corbusier's color manifesto "Polychromie Architecturale". The reason is, that I suspect they are an excellent resource not only for architecture, but also possibly for web design. I often struggle to find a decent color scheme for websites I make. I love grids because they take the guesswork out of design. And time-tested color schemes are like grids, but for colors. The two collections first 43 colors from , last 20 from , starting with "rouge vermillon 59" are derived from naturally occurring color tones or pigment and are supposed to make harmonic color pairing possible.
