Jan 31, David Mundy rated it really liked it. A good overview of Gurdjieff's work, combined with some of Wilson's somewhat similar ideas. Up to a point critical, but also admiring. I don't know when I commenced reading this; however in the late 70s the works of Colin Wilson, after having read his remarkable book titled: The Outsiders, all became fuel for an insatiable appetite for wanting to know more about 'Influencers' in our society.
Historically, these influencers were leaders; however adding the 'pen mightier than sword' aphorism tossed in authors and artists to a quickly swelling rubric of influencers. Colin reduced that list by filtering out those who did not meet his definition of 'Outsiders'. Comparing the strengths and influences from the writings of one to another, like a battle captured more than the heart of the reader. It could under the microscope of Wilson signify the growth of a new social paradigm where only 'Outsiders' demonstrated the temerity to purport, predict or propose.
Heads were lopped for lesser pedantic doodling of someone challenging the 'Insiders'; whether Church, Crown or Landowners. Where today we can observe free speech as a right in many Nations, yesterday before major Outsiders made wittingly or not their challenges through prose, poetry or painting art , the applied a to my to free speech was unfree THOUGHT!
Yes, risk was quantifiable but identifying the genesis, from where the risk was coming, from whom, when and why. Today we do not know how much potential in the advancement of civilization was lost through suppression of even thought through the elimination of either minds or lives for little reason other than fear of change.
This does not review the book above but it introduces the author and his 'Tick' like boring into my curiosity lobe of brain tissue, tickling me and leaving an actual scratch EVERY time I see the name Colin Wilson. His first book was published on or about his 21st birthday to considerable international acclaim in literary circles. His 'output', - the man just writes and writes prodigiously, eclectically and from amazingly self organized research and summarizing which would be the envy of most academics in my humble opinion.
Yes he has those who think he is as mad as he is a genius, but I wonder: is that not a good definition of an 'outsider'. Anything about the book itself will be done in a full review. I have now finished reading it, but books like this are not about completion. At the point when, by my intuitive guideposts I know that I need not to search more for an ending - I shall give it an ending in my head.
In the meantime it has been and remains 4 stars! Jan 18, Dean rated it really liked it Shelves: gurdjieff-fourth-way.
Nice biography of G. There are a few points I disagree with though, such as CW's interpretation of "self-remembering" which seems to be a psychological self-development type technique which it is not. CW also asserts "something went wrong" with Gurdjieff due to his non-event type ending of his life, though this isn't necessarily true.

Gurdjief was trying to escape the mundane world by develping techniques to wake up the sleeping man. He had loyal followers and some success, but at the end of his life seemed discouraged and not satisfied with his own success.
Famous for the aphorism "man is sleeping. Sep 22, Eric rated it really liked it. Excellent insight to this strange but insightful psychological teacher! Although G used ssome unethical methods to get his teaching across there is no doubt he was on to something original. He wanted people to wake up; so do Zen teachers!
