Purple passion fruits are more resistant to fungi such as Fusarium sp. They also absorb more carbon —making them more productive— and have a great capacity to endure water saturation or droughts. With these features, Colombia could have genetic improvement programs to boost exports of this promising fruit. In Colombia, purple passion fruit or gulupa is considered as a promising agricultural product, especially for export.

The researcher performed several ecophysiological processes, in other words, she reviewed the environment of the crop as well as the characteristics and features of the plant. She also applied advanced methodologies such as genotyping by sequencing GBS analyzing genome areas to determine if in effect they were wild varieties or crop area escapees.
She also used conventional methods beginning from the form description of the fruit morphological and cropping agronomic. During the process, they discovered plants that produce more fruits than others or other larger than others, or sweeter or sourer, with a taste similar to banana passion fruit or passion fruit or with more or fewer branches, with could mean less manpower for trimming, a process necessary to avoid fungi proliferation.
