They allowed me one pocket sized religious book which I kept in a small locked compartment in my rack. It was the book I kept in my pocket during deployment and the book which I carried with me whenever I knew that I would be away from home for a long period of time.
It is better if you are already familiar with the teachings of the Buddha, but if not, then the words here are said to be from some of his most direct teachings, in clear and beautiful simplicity. I already had this book, and recently bought an extra copy to give to a friend, because when I shared an excerpt, he was impressed and asked me to "tell him more about the writer.
Great teachings, concise translation, nicely put together in a tight little package. Really, the nuggets of wisdom transcend different religious belief systems and faith. Wisdom is wisdom. This is solid wisdom for all looking to shed the chaos and sorrow in their lives.
