I started this book several months ago but then, to my annoyance, left it somewhere--maybe on a bus or in an apartment I haven't returned to. A few weeks ago I went into a bookshop, bought another copy, and started reading where I had left off.

I give it three stars only because I've enjoyed or been moved more by some of Lenz's other books-- Der Mann im Strom , for instance, or any number of his superb short stories. Aug 01, Lysergius rated it it was amazing Shelves: contemporary-german-fiction. This is a beautifully written novel; the prose is dense, packed and redolent of the open spaces of sea and the cool sea breezes. I suppose it is a tragedy, yet the writing somehow takes the edge from the tragic and transmutes it to the elegaic.
A wonderful novel with a simple theme. Jan 19, Sam rated it liked it. I had to read "Arnes Nachlass" for my German class and I have to admit that I really enjoyed the authors perspective at first. The common use of indirect speech throughout the book made it feel like Hans the narrator was kind of personally talking to me.

Without giving too much information. Also I didn't like the length of the story, I guess it would have been more powerful by adding another pages. Feb 12, Laura rated it really liked it Shelves: favorites , german-literature.
A very sad and beautiful story. Its calm mood and detailed landscape description surprisingly doesn't influence its incredible tension until the end in a bad way. I loved how the characters were portrayed: very extensively and with the author's heart and soul. I am surely reading this again one day and I'm recommending the timeless story of Arne to everyone.
