She served as the executive member of the prestigious Polish Academy of Literature — during the interwar period. Upon Poland's return to independence she became one of the country's most distinguished feminist writers of novels, novellas and stage-plays characterized by socio-realism and psychological depth. Eroticism is not a private matter of the individual. It has its ramifications within all domains of human life and it is not possible to separate it from them by way of contemptuous disparagement in the name of morality, discretion, or yet by a demotion on the hierarchy of subjects worthy of intellectual attention: it cannot be isolated by prudery or relegated to science for its purely biological dimension.

It's really weird - When I started this book all I could think about was 'Oh man, it's going to be so boring! Stupid school reading! But it turned out that it's really fascinating. There are so many things that makes you wonder about the future of whole society and the human rece. It's challenging and meaningful and it's impossible just to 'read it'. You have to 'understand it', you have to 'feel it' you have to 'see through it'.

Very engaging story of two children grown in different families with different values, but with almost the same destiny. Ideals fall and passions play important role in there lives. Heroes are trapped in the new coming world of Socialist revolutions. The book is very realistic and engaging - each of us could have been Zenon Ziembewicz or Elzbieta Biecka.
Strongly recommend as warning message before having close relationship with person out of your social class. Nov 18, joanna rated it did not like it. As much as I like books which focus on human psychology this one seemed to dwell on the source of motivation of the main characters way too much.
Also, it was very boring and the way the ending od the book was relieved took away all of the feeling of suspense that could have been build along and used to catch the reader's attention. Feb 21, Oliver Red rated it it was amazing. This book is complex, tells the story of Zenon Ziembiewicz, who despise his father, but in the end - ends just like him. Zenon tends to shift the blame for his failures on others. He can't confront with the societal opinion of him and his actions Nov 10, Marcin Pazio rated it liked it.

It's a modernist novel, by which I think is meant that there is no all-seeng dominant narrative position, and that the narrator's gaze and perspective shift from time to time. Although the main protagonist is male, it is about the lives of women, and especially about the dual standards applied to men and to women. Nalkowska was criticised in her lifetime for "extreme amoral relativism", which probably says more about male critics' attitudes to women's writing than it does about Nalkowska's work, but let that pass. It's powerfully honest and authentic, and is a essential read for anyone who is even beginning to be interested in the literature of the 20th century.
